Austin Powder celebrates its 150th anniversary at St. Lambrecht

It all began in 1870, when Father Gallus Moser, a monastery chaplain, and Alfred Siersch, the monastery’s pharmacist, produced nitroglycerin on an experimental basis in an old charcoal-burner’s hut in the Unteralpe area near St. Lambrecht. In order not to infringe Alfred Nobel’s patents, they absorbed the nitroglycerin in wheat bran and larch moor, and later also in finely ground chalk. When their experiments were successful, the “Dynamite Factory” was founded in 1871. The financial backers were the innkeeper Christian Gragger and the gingerbread maker Leopold Diller. In this year, the first plant for the commercial production of the “white dynamite” patented by Leopold Diller was also built in the back of Schwarzenbach.
The articles of association, which were filed with the Murau District Court, are dated April 12, 1871, exactly 150 years ago this year.
