The Red Diamond facility supports Austin Powder in our commitment to manufacturing all of the materials that go into a blast.
Established in 1930 and covering 1200 acres in Vinton County, Ohio, Red Diamond is Austin Powder’s core manufacturing plant in North America. The plant was developed to help the company support the nation’s expanding mining needs by transitioning from producing solely blasting powder to incorporate dynamite into their portfolio with three production lines. By 1972, the site began producing detonating cord in addition to already in production cast boosters. The latest investment in Red Diamond came in 2014 when the new energetic material PETN plant was constructed. Since the operation began in 2016, the PETN plant now supplies raw material for backward integration and better supply for our customers.
Nearly the entire line of Austin Powder Company products, excluding detonators, is produced at the Red Diamond facility, including the PETN plant that produces material for cast boosters and detonating cord. The site is also home to maintenance shops that support Austin nationwide, state-of-the-art quality assurance/quality control labs, research and development labs, and testing facilities. Red Diamond is Vinton County, Ohio’s largest employer, with around 250 employees ranging from laborers, operators, engineers, mechanics, electricians, security, truck drivers, lab technicians, chemists, and other support personnel.
We are a traditional manufacturer of initiation systems for industrial blasting operations and an important technological and research base for production and further development of initiation systems.
