U.S. Nitrogen is Austin Powder’s first manufacturing plant to produce liquid ammonium nitrate, a non-combustible component that is used in other Austin Powder products.
From conception in 2010 to fully operational in early 2016, U.S. Nitrogen in Tennessee represents the largest capital investment in Austin Powder’s history. We enhance the efficiencies of our product and service delivery with this facility as well as other backward integration processes. These include the manufacture of highly energetic chemicals and detonators at Austin Powder sites Red Diamond and Austin Star Detonator.
The production process at US Nitrogen begins with natural gas (methane) which is converted into Anhydrous Ammonia. This, in turn, is used to produce Nitric Acid, Ammonium Nitrate Solution, and Hydrox-503, an additional oxidizer (DOT 5.1) product, which Austin Powder uses in the manufacture of our finished products and services. All products are sold for other companies to use in their manufacturing processes as well.
Our two anhydrous ammonia plants at U.S. Nitrogen convert methane into ammonia. That ammonia is oxidized with air to produce 60% nitric acid. The nitric acid produced is neutralized with the ammonia to produce 83% ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate solution is also used to produce Hydrox-503, an oxidizer product.
We also operate an influent water treatment facility that can process up to 1600 gallons/minute (2M gallon/day) drawing water from the Nolichucky River along a 13-mile pipeline. This facility operates with ties to the Greene County Industrial Development Board and can be utilized for additional industry growth in the area as needed.
We are a traditional manufacturer of initiation systems for industrial blasting operations and an important technological and research base for production and further development of initiation systems.
