Austin Powder celebrates 150th anniversary at St. Lambrecht

It all began in 1870, when Father Gallus Moser, a monastery chaplain, and Alfred Siersch, a pharmacist at the monastery, produced nitroglycerin on an experimental basis in an old charcoal burner’s hut in the Unteralpe area near St. Lambrecht. In order not to infringe Alfred Nobel’s patents, they absorbed the nitroglycerin in wheat bran and larch moor, and later also in finely ground chalk. When their experiments were successful, the “Dynamite Factory” was founded in 1871. The financial funders were the innkeeper Christian Gragger and the gingerbread maker Leopold Diller. In this year, the first plant for the commercial production of the “white dynamite” patented by Leopold Diller was also built in the area of Schwarzenbach.

The articles of association, which were submitted to the District Court in Murau, are dated April 12, 1871, exactly on this day 150 years ago.

Austin Powder bought the assets of the then bankrupt Dinamit Nobel Wien (DNW) on June 1, 2003 and with Wolfgang’s oversight, have been the owners of the company since then.

On the occasion of the anniversary a book with the title “Eine zündende Idee” (An igniting idea) is published under the direction of Wolfgang Schuster. The presentation of the book will take place in St. Lambrecht on June 1, 2021.
