On Wednesday, August 20, an extensive tactical drill of the Integrated Rescue System took place at the Austin Detonator premises in Vsetín. A simulated explosion at an explosives warehouse tested the readiness of firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and the company’s internal emergency commission to respond in a hazardous environment. The aim was to test the response to an emergency, the coordination of the various units, and the functionality of crisis communication.
More than fifteen emergency vehicles responded to the scene. The Czech Police took command, secured access routes, controlled traffic, and created a safe corridor for emergency vehicles. They set up a command center, and their pyrotechnic service surveyed the affected building, identified suspicious objects, and secured their removal.
Firefighters from the Zlín Region, together with the Rescue Unit of the Firefighter Service of the Czech Republic, focused on searching for and rescuing injured and missing persons in the ruins. Using special equipment, they intervened in difficult-to-access terrain, ensured fire safety, and prevented the risk of secondary explosions. A drone service monitored the area of the operation and provided the commander with an overview for effective decision-making.
The internal emergency committee of Austin played an important role, putting into practice the procedures defined in the company’s internal regulations – from providing first aid to evacuating employees and ensuring the safety of the emergency services.
The drill also included testing crisis communication—both toward employees via internal communication channels and toward the public and media.
“Such drills are important not only for emergency services, but also for us as a company. They help us verify that in the event of a real accident, we can communicate quickly and effectively, protect our employees, and cooperate with the Integrated Rescue System. We have received valuable feedback and confirmation that our safety procedures work. However, we realize that we need to be constantly alert and respectful of what we work with and produce every day,” said Radim Tomíček, safety manager at Austin Detonator, evaluating the emergency services drill.
